What is a Credentialled Diabetes Educator?

A diabetes educator provides diabetes self-management education for people with diabetes. They play a major role in self-empowering the person with diabetes by focusing on an individual’s needs, providing knowledge, motivation and support to aid the prevention of diabetes related health complications.

Health Practitioners within certain disciplines meeting specific requirements of the Australian Diabetes Educators Association Credentialling Program are awarded status as a Credentialled Diabetes Educator (CDE) for a Three-year period. A CDE must demonstrate ongoing commitment to maintaining high professional standards of practice by meeting the requirements of the ADEA Re-credntialling Program (Australian Diabetes Educators Association, 2008) and therefore specialise in the provision of diabetes education.
